Upon arriving in 2002, Lucchino and the Boston Red Sox ownership group made the historic decision to preserve rather than demolish the iconic 1912 structure. Lucchino oversaw a 10-year, $285 million renovation that added the famous Green Monster Seats, modernized the venue, and anchored the team’s success. He proudly celebrated the park's 100th anniversary in 2012, marking a century of baseball at the Olde Towne Team's home.

The Heavy Hitter: The Marquis Grissom Petco Park Opener Bat ⚾

This isn't just memorabilia; it’s a piece of the architecture of the game. Dated April 8, 2004, this bat comes directly from Larry Lucchino, the driving force behind the design and financing of Petco Park.

The Moment: In the 10th inning of the very first regular-season game at Petco, Giants outfielder Marquis Grissom stepped up against Antonio Osuna and blasted a lead-off home run—the first ever in the stadium’s history.

The History: While the Padres eventually secured a dramatic walk-off win, this bat commemorates the spark that started it all. Grissom gifted this piece to Lucchino, signing it in gold sharpie.
